Jonathon is the kindest and most loving man I have ever known! I fell in love with his honesty and his affection for his family. I married him because I was impressed with his determination and his compassion as he talked about finding new ways to help patients with hearing loss while he earned a clinical doctorate at the University of Louisville and a Ph.D. at MIT. This experience was all the more impressive because Jonathon is the first person in his family to earn a Doctorate degree. We were both exercising at the same gym after work each day in 2004. Katie noticed Jonathon’s wide smile and nice manners with others in the gym. Jonathon had worked up a great plan to say hello so that he could find out the redhead’s name at the water fountain. Things became more complicated when Jonathon realized one day that the pretty redhead he had been smiling at for more than a month had an identical twin. He saw them walking out together. There are people around us who light up rooms when they enter. Katie is one of those people. When I first interacted with her, I found her to be magnetic. As time went on, and we became friends, I realized that she could also make everyone else feel this way. Katie is a warm, welcoming person. She likes to smile. She likes to laugh. She likes to give out compliments. Frankly, it makes her a joy of a person to be with. That’s how everyone feels with her.

We like to spend time together in our free time. A walk through the woods on a cool fall day in New England is about as good as it gets for us. We play sports (mostly basketball and baseball). We have a couple of sweet dogs that we like to horse around with in the yard.

We all enjoy reading. Jonathon likes to start the day with a newspaper or a biography. Kate is more likely to be reading a mystery novel, and Hugo has a stack of comics. Hugo is an enthusiastic and friendly 10-year-old. He is happiest when he is with family and friends and has always wanted to be a big brother. When we told him that we wanted to grow our family through adoption, right away he turned to Jonathon and asked him to tell him everything he would need to know to be a great big brother. He asks every week when he will get to be a big brother, and we are so glad that he is as excited as we are to adopt. We asked him what he would want to tell you, and we included his letter here.

We live in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We chose to live here because it is a welcoming and diverse city with great public schools and amazing universities. Our home is comfy and colorful, and you will find books stacked or open and waiting to be read in every room! We have friends over to watch football, to celebrate pizza Sundays (it's a thing we made up), and for brunch. We spend a lot of time on the patio, eating meals or chatting in the sunshine. We have a large park close to us where we like to play ball, let the dogs play at the dog park, and chat with neighbors.

We both come from larger families (Jonathon has a brother and a sister; Katie has a twin, an older brother, and an older sister). We love spending time with our families over Christmas. Both of our families live near each other, so we take several long trips every year to soak up family time. Our family likes to visit us as well. We like to hike together, go to the beach, and explore new towns.

We have two of the sweetest pups ever. They make us laugh, keep our feet warm when we watch movies on Friday nights, and help us explore our neighborhood with lots of walks. Walter is a six-year-old Labrador mix. He is very calm and gentle. We met him at an animal shelter near us. When we walked by his cage, he tilted his head and raised one small ear at us.
